LESBOS VASE
A few years ago, as part of a school project, we worked on a concept to upcycle life jackets washed ashore on the coast of Lesbos. I was inspired by the idea that a product, based on an individual's personal escape story, could serve as a further means of livelihood for refugees in the vicinity of Lesbos.
Collaboration/ Teacher: Ayuntament de Barcelona, Lesbos Solidarity
Material: Life Jacket
Type of Project: Free
IDEATION
Initially, I wanted to take a closer look at the pattern
of a life jacket to better understand its shape.
Subsequently, using Illustrator, I traced the outline
and seam lines, printed the pattern, and utilized it
for my initial folding attempts
experimenting with initial ideas using large
paper models, I transitioned to a faster approach,
creating folding patterns with sticky notes. I folded
these into containers capable of holding liquids.
TESTING WATERPROOFNESS
In the end, it turned out that the gray side of the fabric worked best as a water container. To further stabilize it and protect it externally, the orange was placed beneath it. Both fabric sides were folded, provided with seams above the neck area, and the strap was threaded through those openings.
